When you see as many people die as I do, you start When you see as many people die as I do, you start to recognize patterns in those who are living well into their 80s, 90s and beyond vs those who don’t

We can’t choose our parents or our genetics but I’m a firm believer in controlling for the variables we CAN influence like physical activity, cognitive flexibility, lifestyle modifications etc

As always, my mission is to share what I’ve learned caring for people at the end of life so we (the living) can benefit from all the wisdom and insights while we still have time to do something about it

Thanks for being here and happy 100th Sir David! 🎂🥳🎉

Most people think terminally ill patients are terr Most people think terminally ill patients are terrified of dying

And while some are, many are also at a level of profound peace, like the patient above

Working in #palliativecare and #hospice has taught me so much about life and what’s truly important

I’m grateful to be able to share these insights with you all

Follow along for more because this wisdom shouldn’t just be reserved for the dying. It belongs to all of us
If there’s one thing my patients realize when they If there’s one thing my patients realize when they’re dying

It’s that so much of what we believe to be important in life doesn’t really matter in the end

The people we love, how we show up for them, the relationships we nurture, the community we build and the way we make our fellow humans feel? That does. Remember that.
If you want to feel more grateful for what you do If you want to feel more grateful for what you do have, spend more time with the dying

For #palliativecare and #hospice healthcare workers, it’s a daily reminder of how unpredictable life can be

We see patients going about living their days normally until one day they get a diagnosis that turns their world upside down. Or an accident changes everything and they can no longer do the things they used to do

It makes simple, everyday moments like dinner with family or a stroll with your dog feel extraordinary

We get to show up, talk to patients and families about their hopes, worries, fears and help alleviate their burdens—physical, emotional, spiritual and existential

It’s no surprise to me that more and more applicants to hospice and palliative care fellowship say that out of all the specialities, ours is the one that reminds them why they went into medicine in the first place

It really is a great place to be
