I used to think “what’s wrong with me” allll

I used to think “what’s wrong with me” alllll the time and I hear it from my clients all the time

“Why can’t I stop procrastinating?”
“Why do I keep dating the same person over and over again?”
“Why can’t I keep the weight off?”

And it wasn’t until I learned about our unconscious minds, neurolinguistic programming and hypnosis that it all made sense

And then the changes started happening SO quickly

This is what happens in your brain:
1. Your brain scans the external environment for a stimulus
2. It recognizes a pattern
3. It executes a program that causes you to have certain thoughts/emotions/actions in response to the stimulus

This is great if you’ve trained your brain to, let’s say, feel excited about going to the gym

But not helpful if your brain created a prior unconscious program that makes you feel self conscious when you exercise in front of people

The good news is that knowing how your brain operates allows you to create new programs that are aligned with how you want to be

Think of it as a ‘software update’ of sorts 😊

Can anyone else relate? 😆

I got my formal diagnosis just a couple years ago, even though I’ve been this way my entire life

It’s been a steep learning curve for sure to figure out how my brain works best and what does/doesn’t help me get things done

What has helped:

1. Hypnosis
It gets me relaxed like I’m meditating but it feels more active than pure mindfulness where my brain starts to wander immediately.

My clients also say they’re less distracted during hypnosis than meditation too

2. Scheduled deep work blocks
I try to schedule 60-90 minute blocks of zero distraction. No phone, internet etc.

It takes a bit to get in flow but once I’m in, I can tap into that adhd hyperfocus that we know and love 😊

3. Embracing change
ADHD brains need novelty and so now I’m less hard on myself if I need a change of scenery or a new piece of stationery to spice things up.

Part of learning about this is being compassionate towards myself when I otherwise would’ve been judgmental

Have you ever compared present day you to a past version of yourself and realize how far you’ve come?

Took a quick trip to the west coast to present a poster at the Society of Hospital Medicine national conference this weekend

The last time I attended this conference was 2017 and

2017: didn’t present anything
2024: presenting a poster

2017: would never have spoken up in small groups or asked a question
2024: spoke up, networked and participated like it was nothing

2017: spent evenings drinking and staying up way too late
2024: no alcohol at all, slept at my usual bedtime

2017: needed to be with others and hang out whenever there was down time
2024: perfectly happy to socialize and be by myself

Here are some questions to ask yourself or perhaps journal about:

1. How am I physically/emotionally/mentally different than I was ___ years ago?

2. How do I respond differently to a situation that would previously stress me out?

3. What steps did I take to get to where I am now and how can I replicate that for other areas of my life that I want to improve?

Remember, we overestimate what we can do in a year
And underestimate what we can do in a decade

So many people at the end of life wish they could’ve lived differently

They’re filled with “what ifs” and “why didn’t I?”

Don’t wait until it’s too late to chase your dreams or prioritize your healing or growth

There’s no better time than now to seize the moment, embrace transformation, and create a life you’ll be proud to look back on ❤️
